Laser eye surgery is a procedure that improves your vision and gives you freedom from glasses and contact lenses. Laser insitu keratomileusis (LASIK) is performed worldwide with increasing frequency for the correction of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. With LASIK, a thin flap of cornea is lifted, and the laser is then used to precisely remodel the undersurface. Following the procedure, the corneal flap is repositioned, where it quickly seals itself into place. Vision improvement is quick, hours to days, with minimal to no discomfort. Excimer laser surgery has been performed since the 1980s and over 30 million laser eye surgery procedures have been carried out worldwide helping to change people's lives for the better. more...

The Lasik eye surgery process:
Create a thin-hinged flap on the cornea (front of the eye) with a precise surgical instrument called a microkeratome or laser instrument called femtosecond.
The flap is carefully lifted and the tissue of the cornea is then re-shaped by a special laser.
After the treatment, the flap is gently folded back into its original position and heals naturally, without the need for stitches. FIGURE 1.
What is iLASIK?
iLASIK is the combination of all of the latest developments in Laser Vision Correction. iLASIK combinesIntralase, and the Visx Star S4TM Laser with WavefrontCustomvue treatment.
Whay Visx ?
-
The widest FDA approval
-
The highest level of resolution of wavefront refractive error due to the use of Fourier
algorithms.
-
Active 3-D eye tracking compensates for intraoperative eye movement in all
dimensions.
-
Iris Registration (IR) – the laser platform that centers and aligns the treatment
while compensating for eye cyclorotation and physiologic pupil migration.
-
Compensates for pupil migration during physiologic pupil dilation
optimizing treatment time and reducing the adverse effects of thermal loading of the
delicate corneal tissue.
IntraLase LASIK Femtosecond Laser Eye Surgery
IntraLase also known as all-laser LASIK or Intralasik is a new state of the art laser treatment that cuts the LASIK corneal flap by using a femtosecond laser. Creating the LASIK flap with IntraLase, a computer-controlled laser, allows surgeons to tailor the corneal flap for each individual patient and each individual eye. National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) has approved the Intralase technologies for use on U.S. astronauts. All-laser LASIK procedure has also been cleared for U.S. military personnel, including Naval aviators, and Air Force pilots.
Advantages of INTRALASE:
-100% Blade-Freecomputer-guided technology
-Accuracy in fashioning a uniform thickness Corneal Flap of desired thickness.
-Better visual result
-Better quality of vision
-Virtually eliminates flap complications
-Higher degrees of long and shortsightedness can be treated as thinner flaps can be formed
Wavefront-guided or customized ablation patterns are available on several commercially available excimer laser systems for LASIK Laser Eye Surgery. The VISX CustomVue procedure employs the WaveScan wavefront system, a diagnostic system that captures a comprehensive "fingerprint" of each eye and generates an individualized treatment for each CustomVue procedure. With conventional treatments, the higher order aberrations are increased because the preexisting higher order aberrations are not measured or treated. Wavefront-customized treatments aim to treat all higher order aberrations by simply adding in additional treatment for spherical and high order aberrations. Only Visx CustomVue, is approved by the U.S. Government for LASIK on Naval Aviators, Air Force Pilots, and NASA Astronauts (when combined with the Intralase flap)..
LASEK, ASA, TRANSEPITHELIAL PRK and EPILASIK are surface ablation techniques. All of them variations of PRK. These surface ablation techniques are sometimes recommended instead of LASIK for people with thin or irregular corneas. Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is the original laser vision correction procedure. To perform PRK surgery, the laser eye surgeon first removes the thin corneal covering known as the epithelium. He then reshapes the cornea using the excimer laser. A 'bandage' contact lens is placed on the eye following the procedure to speed the epithelial regeneration, which usually takes three to four days. The epithelium regenerates in just under a week. PRK entails some short-term, mild pain, but the outcomes are the same as LASIK laser eye surgery. Vision is usually not the clearest at first, but does improve by the end of the week.
